Cold sores treatment & testing in Australia
Cold Sores / Herpes Labialis / Herpes Test
Herpes Cold sores can be painful, but they disappear by themselves within a couple of weeks. Some treatments can alleviate the symptoms. Herpes test for cold sores is a simple blood test at home with a herpes test result in 20 minutes.
What are cold sores?
The technical term for cold sores is herpes labialis. Often called just herpes. Cold sores manifest itself as blisters that develop into ulcers on the lips and around the mouth. The cause is a virus called herpes cold sores. Herpes simplex virus comes in 2 different types, herpes type 1 and herpes type 2. There are usually type 1 that provides cold sores, while type 2 often wounds on and around the genitals.
Herpes Cold Sores is highly contagious. The most common method of transmission is through other people's saliva. Most infected as children and can become quite sick during the first outbreak. In addition to mouth ulcers and pain when they eat, the symptoms include fever, swollen lymph glands, bad breath, poor appetite, and malaise.
The infection can come back several times because the immune system fails to eliminate the virus. After an outbreak, the virus will "hibernate" until it is reactivated again (a herpes test is the only way to know if herpes virus is dormant in your system) by such as a sore throat, fatigue, stress, menstruation, sunlight, and certain drugs. The symptoms will flare up again but in a milder form.
When you have cold sores, you can infect others. It would help if you avoided kissing, drinking from the same glass and sharing utensils. You should also avoid oral sex because it may give herpes infection on their partner's genitalia. You should always get tested for herpes simplex with a herpes test at home if you suspect that you have been infected, your partner should also have a herpes home test.
Cold sores start as red spots that turn into small blisters. A couple of days in advance can someone get a warning in the form of stinging pain, throbbing sensation or altered sensation to touch where blisters later. When blisters rupture, forms a wound. Some also get a fever. In 7-10 days, the skin becomes good again. Herpes home test will tell you if you still are infected.
Treatment & Self Help
If sunlight triggers cold sores, the use of sunscreen and bold zinc ointment may provide protection. There is some research to suggest that sunscreen on skin and lips can prevent outbreaks.
There are prescription antiviral creams (acyclovir and penciclovir) in pharmacies that can alleviate the symptoms, but the research does not provide reliable answers to how effective the treatment is. For best effect when treatment begins in the warning phase, but they can not prevent outbreaks. Side effects may include red and itchy skin.
Analgesic creams are used against cold sores, but even here you can research provide reliable answers to how good the action is.
Doctors sometimes prescription for antiviral drugs to infants, children (oral) and adults (tablets) with very pronounced herpes labialis. Antivirals may also be used with a weakened immune system, such as the HIV or cancer. In most cases, people, do not need medication and the blisters heal within 7-10 days and leaves no scar.
If the infection spreads to the eye, it can at worst threaten vision. Therefore, it is important to treat the infection quickly with ointment and supervision of an ophthalmologist.
Aciclovir is the most common antiviral agent. It can be taken as tablets, cream, ointment or suspension.
Aciclovir may provide some benefits regarding less pain and faster healing. The outbreak is therefore not gone away, but one can get any fewer days with ailments. Antivirals should be taken as early as possible in the outbreak. The funds can produce side effects such as headaches, dry mouth, nausea, diarrhea, and flatulence.
Cold sores heal within 7-10 days and leave no scar. Some receive annual outbreaks, but most get rid of outbreaks with time. Approximately one in ten gets outbreak six times a year or more often.
If you have a weakened immune system, herpes infection becomes more serious. You should then consult a physician for the condition. The physician need not be advised if symptoms are mild and you are otherwise healthy.

Herpes Test Colde Sores (HSV1) Home Test Kit
home screening test for HSV 1 virus "all types" in the whole-blood sample.
The HSV-1 Rapid Test Device detects antibodies to HSV-1 through visual interpretation of color development. Recombinant antigens of HSV-1 and anti-human antibodies are used to detect the specific antibodies in the human whole blood samples. When a sample is added to the sample well on the test panel, HSV-1 antibodies, if present, will bind to the anti-human conjugated to colored particles on the sample pad.
As the specimen migrates along the strip by capillary action and interacts with reagents on the membrane, the complex will be captured by recombinant HSV-1 antigens immobilized at the detection zone. An excess colored particle is captured at the internal control zone.
The presence of a red band in the test region (T) indicates a positive result for the particular antibodies, while its absence indicates a negative result. A red band at the control region (C) serves as a procedural control, indicating that the proper volume of specimen has been added and membrane wicking is working.
What kind of sample is required?
A simple blood sample collected in the privacy of your home.
What do the Cold Sores HSV1 test results mean?
Herpes HSV-1 Antibodies Present (positive): This means you have a herpes colde sores HSV1 infection, cold sores, which are small and somewhat painful blisters that usually show up on or around a person’s lips,
Herpes colde sores antibodies can take up to ten days to develop after primary infection with the virus. If you believe you have been exposed, but have no symptoms, you should, therefore, wait at least two weeks before getting tested, you may also want to go for a repeat test after six months if you do not undergo regular screening.
Limitations of the test
The HSV-1 Rapid Test Device is for the home in vitro diagnostic use, and should only be used for the qualitative detection of antibodies to HSV-1. The color intensity in a positive band should not be evaluated as “quantitative or semi-quantitative.”
Failure to follow the TEST PROCEDURE and RESULT INTERPRETATION may adversely affect test performance and invalidate the test result.
Results obtained with this assay, particularly in the case of weak test lines that are difficult to interpret should be used in conjunction with other clinical information available to the physician.
A high dose “hook effect” may occur where the color intensity of the test band decreases as the concentration of antibodies increases. If a “hook effect” is suspected, dilution of specimens may increase color intensity of the test band.
Clinical sensitivity and specificity The HSV-1 Rapid Test Device (Whole Blood) have been evaluated with specimens obtained from a population of symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals. A commercial HSV-1 EIA test was used as a comparison. The overall agreement both tests is 90%.
Precision Intra-Assay Within-run precision has been determined by using ten replicates of negative and positive specimens. The specimens were correctly identified >99% of the time. Ten independent assays have determined Inter-Assay Between-run precision on the negative and positive samples. Three different lots of the HSV-1 Rapid Test Device (Whole Blood) have been tested using these specimens. The specimens were correctly identified >99% of the time.
